Identification of microorganisms: BioChem introduces mass spectrometry analysis by means of MALDI TOF

From June 1, 2018 BioChem Labor für biologische und chemische Analytik GmbH will offer mass spectrometric identification of microorganisms by means of MALDI TOF.

The API® systems – previously used for the identification – are based on biochemical reactions of microorganisms with different substrates and subsequent comparison of the reaction profile with a database. A major disadvantage of these methods is that the database contains only a limited number of microorganisms which can also lead to inaccurate identification results.

Therefore, after the switch to MALDI TOF we will only apply biochemical methods in rare cases and limited to a defined period of time, e.g. for verification in case of inconclusive identification results.

Instead, with MALDI TOF we offer now a state-of-the-art method for the identification of microorganisms.

Compared to biochemical identifications the advantages of MALDI TOF are overwhelming:

  • very high speed (fastest method available)
  • very precise and highly reliable results
  • large database with annual updates of new species of bacteria, yeasts and moulds
  • very high throughput

A great advantage for our customers is that results will usually be available on the next working day.
